We are confronted with a stark reality.
According to the International Monetary Fund and other reputable sources, a staggering 85% of the world’s population resides in developing countries.
These nations grapple with a myriad of challenges ranging from political instability and rampant crime to widespread poverty, hunger, inadequate health care and failing education systems. These in-country obstacles combine to leave their people yearning for more and deserving better prospects to realize the lives they desire.
Allow me to share a profound realization that now informs my thoughts and deeds each day: Creating opportunities lies at the heart of fostering a better existence for people.
My personal journey began in Pakistan, one among more than 150 nations confronting economic and social hurdles in the developing sphere.
Nurtured by a Pakistani family deeply entrenched in community values and respect for education, I was raised with a belief in the transformative potential of groundbreaking activities that represent the opportunity for both business and social value. These early teachings propelled me toward a business education in the United States and continue to shape my worldview today.
Later, these principles guided me to a life-changing decision to establish roots in Honduras, a nation grappling with its own array of challenges — rampant poverty and hunger, an ailing education system, and economic and political volatility.
I deliberately chose Honduras, fueled by my ambition to effect meaningful change within a nation that coveted better. I saw business opportunities and pursued them. I saw prospects to balance business prosperity with a heartfelt dedication to fostering enduring social value and acted.
I founded a company in Honduras called GK Global that achieved success. The company flourished in Honduras. As a result, we channeled investments toward fostering employment growth. Employment levels surged and remained steadfast even in the most difficult times.
We offered salaries surpassing industry averages and facilitated continuous learning opportunities for our workforce. We enabled skill enhancement and encouraged professional growth.
With corporate success came the establishment of the GK Foundation, aimed at extending further opportunities to the community. Presently, our focus areas include general medical services and social assistance to underserved communities, fostering educational opportunities, environmental sustainability initiatives and nutritional aid efforts in Central America and Asia. Earlier this year, I transitioned from my leadership role at GK Global to concentrate on advancing life-altering opportunities for people wanting a better life.
This is a choice. As successful business leaders, we can either acquiesce to the prevailing reality of the developing world today or we can collaborate to leverage opportunities that will advance the developing world around us.
This can be a partnership at every level. I invite you to join me in making such an intentional and purpose-driven business choice. This journey commences with a fundamental blueprint for conducting business in developing nations:
Understand the local context — Acknowledge the challenges confronting the country, including poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, human rights and adherence to the rule of law.
Promote ethical conduct — Without exception, uphold stringent ethical standards and serve as a beacon of integrity and an example across all facets of your business operations, including interactions with employees, suppliers, customers and other stakeholders.
Foster shared values — Identify opportunities to achieve success that benefits your business and enriches the society supporting your enterprise. This is entirely compatible with what is possible.
Invest in employee well-being — Offer competitive wages, comprehensive benefits, avenues for advancement and implement training and skill development programs to empower your employees.
Support local communities and be loyal — Facilitate community development initiatives including education, health care, infrastructure and business enhancement. Solicit input from community members on decisions that may impact them.
Fostering opportunity is essential to overcoming the hurdles faced by developing nations. Together, we possess the capability to drive transformative and value-creating progress in these regions — it’s within reach, should we choose to do what is right.
